October in the Galapagos is the end of the cool season: air at 68 to 79 °F (20 to 26 °C), sea around 67 to 70 °F (19 to 21 °C), little rain, and calmer seas than in August. Sea lion pups are being born, and snorkeling is strong. El Niño may warm the water this year.
We run small-ship Galapagos expedition cruises from Ecuador. These six photos show what October looks like from our decks, pangas, and beaches, and the sections below explain what to expect.

What does a Galapagos cruise look like in October?
Waving from the stern of EcoGalaxy
A Galapagos cruise is social from the first day. Guests meet on deck for the safety briefing, the first look at the islands, and the first photos, and the stern of a catamaran like EcoGalaxy is where many of those photos get taken.

Kicker Rock and the long lens
Bring a telephoto lens. Cliffs, seabirds, and open-water scenes are best photographed from a distance, and Kicker Rock, the tall volcanic formation off San Cristóbal also known as León Dormido, is a good example.

Life vests on, turquoise bay ahead
Life vests go on before every panga ride. October brings calmer seas and clear water, so a bay like this one is a typical backdrop for the first days of a cruise.

A red-sand beach, with the yacht anchored behind
Small yachts anchor close to shore, so the beach landing takes minutes, and the naturalist guide walks the group through what they are seeing. Here, Galaxy Sirius waits in the bay behind four guests.

The sunset you stop talking for
The Galapagos sit on the equator, so the sun sets at around 6 p.m. all year. In October, the deck is the best seat on the boat at the end of the day.

Pangas: how you get from the yacht to the island
A panga is the small inflatable boat that carries guests between the yacht and the landing sites. Guests ride together with a guide, and the ride often turns into wildlife watching along the shore.

What wildlife is active in the Galapagos in October?
Several seasonal stories overlap in October. According to the Galapagos Conservation Trust, these are the ones to look for:
For where each species lives, see our island-by-island Galapagos wildlife guide.
How will El Niño change October 2026 in the Galapagos?
El Niño is active this year, and it can make the water warmer than a normal October. NOAA’s October 8 update keeps an El Niño Advisory in place, with the Niño-3.4 region at 2.1 °C (3.8 °F) above normal and a greater than 83% chance of a strong to very strong event through January to March 2027.
The Charles Darwin Foundation says El Niño 2026 is already underway and that the first signals are likely to show in ocean conditions and food availability, with changes in animal behavior and reproduction coming later. That matters most for marine animals such as sea lions, which the Galapagos Conservation Trust lists as Endangered, with El Niño events as their main threat.
For a traveler, this means the water may be warmer and the garúa mist less common than the table above suggests, and some marine wildlife may be harder to find. We cannot promise what you will see on a given day. Our guide to El Niño and expedition yacht travel explains how itineraries adapt.
What should I wear for a Galapagos cruise in October?
Pack light layers for the mornings, a long-sleeve sun shirt, a hat, sunscreen, and a wetsuit or rash guard for snorkeling, since the sea is cool in a typical October. Ask which snorkeling gear is provided on board before you pack. Add a telephoto lens for shots like photo 2, and a waterproof case for your camera on panga rides.
Which Galaxy yacht suits an October cruise?
The right yacht depends on your dates and group size. Departures vary, so ask our team which yachts sail on your dates.
EcoGalaxy, the catamaran in photo 1, completes the fleet. The Galapagos Conservation Trust suggests catamarans for guests prone to seasickness, and that applies to Galaxy Alya and EcoGalaxy.
Frequently asked questions about the Galapagos in October
Is October a good time to visit the Galapagos?
Yes. October has calmer seas than the peak of the cool season, low rain, strong snorkeling, and sea lion pups. It is also part of the low season, so availability is usually better. This year, El Niño may warm the water.
What is the weather in the Galapagos in October?
Air temperatures are 68 to 79 °F (20 to 26 °C) and rainfall is low. Mornings can start with mist over the highlands that clears as the sun comes out.
Is the water cold in the Galapagos in October?
In a typical year, the sea is 67 to 70 °F (19 to 21 °C), which is cool enough that most guests wear a wetsuit or a thick rash guard to snorkel. In an El Niño year, the water can be warmer.
Will I see baby sea lions in the Galapagos in October?
Usually yes. Sea lion pups are born from August and pupping continues into November, and in October the pups often approach snorkelers.
Is October good for snorkeling in the Galapagos?
Yes. The Humboldt Current is still bringing nutrients to the shores, which the Galapagos Conservation Trust says makes snorkeling great in October. Our Galapagos snorkeling guide has the details.
Is it rough at sea in October?
Less than in the middle of the cool season. Seas are choppiest from June to September and calmer in October, although they stay choppier than from January to April.
Does El Niño affect a Galapagos trip in October 2026?
It can. Warmer water and less food for marine animals are the main changes. The islands stay open and trips go ahead, and landings or routes can change for weather or wildlife conditions.
