This expedition traces the seafaring routes that once connected Scotland to the Arctic. Setting sail from Fairlie near Glasgow, you'll island-hop through the Outer Hebrides, Orkney, and Shetland before crossing open water to the green cliffs of the Faroe Islands and the dramatic north coast of Iceland. Each stop feels more remote, more elemental, more untamed.

Into the High Arctic

Beyond Iceland, the voyage pushes north into true wilderness. We'll attempt a landing on Jan Mayen, a volcanic outpost with no permanent residents, before reaching Svalbard in all its untouched glory. Here, glaciers meet the sea, polar bears roam the ice edge, and the landscape stretches in every direction without a trace of civilisation.

Depart on foot with your guide from the picturesque harbor in Kirkwall and stroll along the ancient shoreline of Kirkwall, which dates to when the town was first founded by the Vikings. The shoreline is now a lovely flagstone street which runs from the harbor to the center of town. En route, hear stories of bygone times in Kirkwall. Arrive at St. Magnus Cathedral, a beautiful red and yellow sandstone building that dominates the skyline of Kirkwall, and learn about its 850-year history. Next, visit the neighboring Earl’s and Bishop’s Palaces, once belonging to Earl Patrick Stewart, who used forced labor to build the Earl’s Palace.
