Zuid-Amerika Expeditiecruises: Een Praktische Planningsgids (Lindblad Expeditions)

What the Inventory Tells You at a Glance In our inventory, South America expedition cruising is represented by a single operator — Lindblad Expeditions — with 1509 departures available across the platform. That depth of scheduling means travellers can find a sailing in virtually any month of the year: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December are all covered, making this one of the few regions where year-round planning is genuinely feasible rather than aspirational. Voyages range from 5 nights at the shorter end to 17 nights for those seeking broader geographic reach, with 9 nights standing out as the most common itinerary length in our inventory. December is the busiest departure month, reflecting the convergence of Northern Hemisphere holiday travel and peak wildlife-activity windows in the Galápagos and Amazon. Embarkation ports are Quito and Lima, the two principal gateways into the region's expedition zones. The Fleet: Six Ships, Six Very Different Experiences Lindblad Expeditions operates six vessels on South American routes in our inventory, and the choice of ship is arguably the most consequential decision a traveller will make — more so than itinerary or departure month. **National Geographic Endeavour II** carries 96 guests, the largest vessel in this fleet. Its size supports a broader range of onboard amenities and a larger expedition team, but also means more guests sharing each landing site. **National Geographic Islander II** and **National Geographic Gemini** each carry 48 guests — a mid-range footprint that balances landing-group flexibility with onboard comfort. **Delfin III**, purpose-built for Amazon river operations, accommodates 42 guests. Its shallower draft allows access to tributaries and flooded forest channels that larger ocean-going vessels cannot reach. **Delfin II** carries 28 guests, offering a noticeably more intimate ratio of expedition staff to travellers — a meaningful difference when naturalist-guided skiff excursions are the primary activity. **National Geographic Delfina** is the smallest vessel in the fleet at 16 guests, providing the closest equivalent to a private-yacht experience within a structured expedition framework. Landing groups are small, schedules are flexible, and the staff-to-guest ratio is the highest in the fleet. Travellers considering ship size as a selection criterion should weigh landing-site access against onboard facilities: smaller vessels spend more time in shallower, less-trafficked waters, while larger vessels carry more specialists and equipment. Voyage Length: Matching Nights to Coverage In our inventory, itinerary lengths span 5 to 17 nights, and the right choice depends on which ecosystems a traveller prioritises. A 5-night voyage is the entry point — sufficient for a focused Galápagos loop or an introductory Amazon segment, but not enough to combine both. The 9-night format, the most common length in our inventory, typically allows a more complete circuit of a single region: a fuller Galápagos island sequence, or a deeper Amazon penetration reaching remote tributaries. Voyages extending toward 17 nights are designed for travellers who want to move between distinct ecosystems — for example, combining Galápagos wildlife landings with Andean or Amazon segments. These longer sailings require a greater time commitment and, proportionally, a higher total cost, but they reduce the need for a return trip to cover the same ground. Travellers considering voyage length should ask: is this a first visit or a return? First-time visitors often find 9 nights the most efficient introduction, while returning travellers with specific research or naturalist interests tend to gravitate toward the 15- or 17-night options. Pricing, What's Included, and the Single-Supplement Question Lindblad Expeditions voyages in our inventory start from $4,000. Prices and availability are subject to change; final price confirmed at booking. Expedition cruise pricing in this category is typically all-inclusive in structure: accommodation, all meals aboard, naturalist-guided excursions, skiff landings, and expedition equipment are generally bundled into the fare. Travellers should confirm with the operator exactly which shore excursions, park fees, and pre- or post-cruise hotel nights are covered, as these vary by itinerary. On the single-supplement question: in our current inventory, departures with at least one cabin available at no single supplement stand at zero. Solo travellers should budget for a single-supplement charge or enquire directly with Lindblad Expeditions about cabin-share programmes, which the operator has historically offered on some sailings. This is a material cost consideration for solo travellers planning a bucket-list voyage in this region. The all-inclusive nature of the fare means that once aboard, day-to-day discretionary spending is low — a relevant factor for travellers comparing the total cost of an expedition cruise against a land-based itinerary with equivalent naturalist access. Physical Demands and Who These Voyages Suit Expedition cruising in South America — whether in the Galápagos, the Amazon, or Patagonian waters — involves a level of physical engagement that differs meaningfully from ocean or river cruising in other regions. Travellers considering these voyages should assess their fitness honestly before booking. Landings in the Galápagos frequently involve wet landings (stepping from a skiff into shallow water) and walking on uneven volcanic terrain. Amazon skiff excursions may require sitting in a small open boat for extended periods in humid conditions. Patagonian itineraries can involve wind, cold, and steep terrain on shore excursions. None of these activities require athletic fitness, but limited mobility or difficulty with uneven surfaces will restrict participation in the core expedition activities that define the value of these voyages. Lindblad Expeditions' expedition teams are trained to assist guests with varying mobility levels, and travellers with specific physical considerations should contact the operator directly before booking to understand which activities will be accessible. The 365-day operating calendar in our inventory reflects the fact that conditions vary significantly by season. December, the busiest departure month, coincides with active wildlife periods in the Galápagos. Travellers who prefer smaller crowds on the water may find shoulder months — such as May or September — offer comparable wildlife activity with fewer concurrent sailings. Departure Scheduling: Reading the Calendar With 1509 departures in our inventory and sailings available every month of the year, the scheduling depth for South America Lindblad Expeditions voyages is substantial. Embarkation from Quito serves primarily Galápagos-routed itineraries, while Lima serves as the gateway for Amazon and Peruvian river voyages aboard vessels such as Delfin II, Delfin III, and National Geographic Delfina. December is the busiest departure month in our inventory — travellers booking December sailings, particularly on the smaller vessels (16 or 28 guests), should expect earlier sell-out timelines and should confirm availability well in advance. The 48-guest vessels — National Geographic Islander II and National Geographic Gemini — offer more cabin inventory per departure and may provide more last-minute flexibility. For travellers with fixed travel windows, the year-round calendar means that the primary constraint is cabin availability on the preferred vessel, not the absence of departures. The 9-night format departs across all twelve months, making it the most scheduling-flexible option in the fleet. Shorter 5-night sailings are also available across multiple months, providing an accessible entry point for travellers with limited leave or those combining an expedition cruise with a broader South America land itinerary. How to Choose: A Decision Framework Given the range of vessels, voyage lengths, and departure months in our inventory, travellers benefit from working through a short set of decisions before enquiring. **Step one — ecosystem priority.** Galápagos, Amazon, or both? This determines embarkation port (Quito or Lima) and narrows the vessel shortlist immediately. **Step two — group size preference.** Travellers who prioritise intimate landings and high staff-to-guest ratios should look first at National Geographic Delfina (16 guests) or Delfin II (28 guests). Those who value a broader onboard programme or are travelling with a group should consider National Geographic Endeavour II (96 guests) or the mid-range 48-guest vessels. **Step three — nights available.** A 5-night voyage is a focused introduction; 9 nights is the most common format and covers a single region thoroughly; 15 or 17 nights allows multi-ecosystem coverage. Match the voyage length to the time available, not the other way around. **Step four — departure month.** December offers the most departures but the most competition for cabins. Shoulder months across the year-round calendar may suit travellers who prefer quieter conditions. The busiest departure month and the most wildlife-active month are not always the same — travellers with specific naturalist interests should research seasonal patterns for their target ecosystem before selecting a date. **Step five — budget.** Voyages start from $4,000 per person. Prices and availability are subject to change; final price confirmed at booking. Solo travellers should factor in the single supplement, as no departures in our current inventory offer a no-supplement cabin option. The all-inclusive structure means the headline fare is close to the total cost, but park fees, international flights, and pre- or post-cruise accommodation should be budgeted separately.
